choice magazine:  volume 2/issue 3

Christie Latona and Laura Lind-Blum have created a deck of cards with 27 whimsical drawings of hats—yes—hats.  What a fun way to introduce clients or teams to new perspectives.  On one side of each card is a colorful drawing of a hat, flip it over and find powerful questions to prompt reflection and discussion.

I introduced the deck to a colleague who was stalled on her business plan.  She immediately chose the jesters hat.  We explored what meaning the hat held for her and what it would be to create a business plan from “the jester.”  The exercise gave her permission to think differently and to bring more of her essential self to her business.  This simple exercise opened the door to some powerful coaching.  Don’t worry about coming up with creative ways to use the cards, the deck comes with a guidebook packed with suggestions.  One Hat At A Time™ provides a fun way to flush out new perspectives or as their creators say “create new hattitudes.”

The One Hat folks - Christie Latona and Laura-Lind Blum were a big hit at the ICF Conference. There were crowns and hardhats everywhere, even the conference MC played with them.

What they have created is a delightful deck of cards that are powerful - and fun - perspective shifters.

What coach or trainer doesn't work with perspectives, it is core to being a change agent. The One Hat At A Time Cards take a simple and common metaphor - hats, each hat is symbolic of a line of work and the style, mindset, and environment that goes with it. By randomly choosing a hat you have an easy way to access a different mindset.

It is a great creativity tool in that it introduces divergent /tangential thinking to a question or task at hand. If you are creating a workout routine, what would the jester hat bring to it? If you are creating a presentation, what would the chef's hat bring to it?
